- [01:00:57] <viator>
i mean it cant be used for anything or anywhere other than aol

- [01:02:25] * aconbere|mobile (n=aconbere@c-71-227-193-183.hsd1.or.comcast.net) has joined #openid
- [01:03:47] <myren>
aol openid is so you can authenticate on _anyone_'s site with your aol login
- [01:04:20] <myren>
openid.aol.org/viator is a valid openid anywhere
- [01:06:03] <viator>
yeah but who wants aol in their name lol
- [01:06:06] <dcorbin>
viator: the URL acts as your 'userId' for any site that supports openId
- [01:06:19] <dcorbin>
There are other openid providers.
- [01:06:32] <viator>
how would i go about setting up my own server todo so
- [01:06:35] <viator>
are there packages
- [01:06:48] <viator>
for debian or ubuntu etc
- [01:08:10] <dcorbin>
You can probably find some thing here: http://openid.net/wiki/index.php/Libraries
- [01:08:49] <viator>
i found a few packages hmmm
- [01:11:29] <dcorbin>
I hope to run my own server too, eventually (call me paranoid).
- [01:12:33] <viator>
heh
- [01:12:52] <viator>
welll it is a great idea i hope it gets more widely accepted
- [01:13:24] <viator>
i have dozens of different logins with differnt passwords etc
- [01:13:34] <viator>
and it gets difficult to manage
- [01:13:41] <dcorbin>
There seems to be a lot of providers jumping on recently. I'm looking for more "clients".
- [01:13:49] <dcorbin>
(Can't remember the proper term...)
- [01:13:58] <dcorbin>
dozens? I have over a hundred..
- [01:14:05] <viator>
had to install the gnome password manager
- [01:15:03] <dcorbin>
Another interesting ID is the use of a password hasher extension for the browser.
- [01:15:14] <dcorbin>
er, idea.
- [01:15:23] <dcorbin>
I've not tried on yet though.
- [01:15:36] <viator>
hmmm interesting
- [01:15:50] <dcorbin>
er, one.
- [01:16:15] <dcorbin>

Hi. Is it possible to direct a openid provider to figure out the openid url of the user and pass it back to the website ? So that if there was a link 'log in using Mycompany OpenID server' users would not have to type their 'mycompany' openid url ?
- [17:24:11] <Larholm>
what openid library does aol use? :)
- [17:24:38] <terrell>
pisi - no, it has to originate from the person using the site
- [17:24:59] <terrell>
but a bookmarklet could easily be generated perhaps that would prepopulate an openid field
- [17:26:01] <pisi>
but if the user does not know the url yet..
- [17:26:22] <pisi>
or should not use for some strange reason. If the URL can be derived from some other source.
- [17:26:51] <terrell>
the user arrives at a site
- [17:26:56] <terrell>
the user has to enter the info
- [17:26:59] <terrell>
simple as that
- [17:27:26] <terrell>
potentially the browser could already 'know' and fill it in
- [17:27:44] <terrell>
but that's not something the site can do - it's still on the user side of things
- [17:28:15] <pisi>
well. I'm using eID cards that have certificates with information that can be turned into urls and is in fact the way it works currently. But I would like to have the site using this service to have a very easy setup: enter your openid and login (no matter what openid url) OR a link 'log on using your eID' and the eID logon would be a automatically generated URL
- [17:28:57] <pisi>
so that it would be implementation detail that the login process used openid actually. Upgrading to other URL-s it would be an option for a smarter users.
- [17:29:15] <Larholm>
pisi, iirc openid doesn't specify how to setup a Passport-like service where a request from the clients browser can prefill the users existing logged-in profile

Is there any recommended storage engine for openID? SQL vs. File: pros/cons
- [19:23:58] <Cody`macbook>
I'm trying to decide what to use
- [19:26:04] <jondevtroop>
Cody`macbook: we use mysql
- [19:27:48] <Cody`macbook>
I'd like to use SQL, personally, but I can't get my MySQL class working with a storage engine.
- [19:27:53] <Cody`macbook>
None of the insertions happen or anything
- [19:28:04] <Cody`macbook>
and I've provided calls for the pear::db class and such
- [19:28:05] <Cody`macbook>
(this is php)
- [19:28:48] <Cody`macbook>
the insertion into the database is never happening for openid_associations :/
- [19:29:10] <Cody`macbook>
(I've been working on this for far too long, so I figured I come here and see what was recommended)
- [19:32:47] <Cody`macbook>
So you guys would recommend mysql then?
- [19:34:40] <jondevtroop>
i would personally
- [19:34:48] <jondevtroop>
i wish i could be more help
- [19:35:48] <Cody`macbook>
Main problem I have with the API is there aren't many php developers around that know it lol
- [19:36:04] <Cody`macbook>
everyone that's using it is using mostly rails/python it seems
- [19:36:24] <Cody`macbook>
oh well, I found the wordpress db engine's storage engine, may be able to base mine off that
- [19:36:38] <Cody`macbook>
if not, there's a php patch with some ssl functions that I can use to make my own client
