<Trevor Johns> lorph: OpenID lets you use a single username and password across any site on the Internet (assuming that the site supports OpenID).
- [04:05:50] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> If your site asks users to login, then I'd say yes, definitely incorporate it! Though, keep in mind I'm biased. :)
- [04:07:06] <lorph>
is there a page that explains this

- [04:07:59] * flaccid (n=flaccid@123-243-80-114.tpgi.com.au) Quit (Connection timed out)
- [04:08:20] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> All of the information is on openid.net. Wikipedia has some good information too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenID).
- [04:08:56] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> The way it works is that users are given a URL as a username
- [04:09:44] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> It could be their own website/blog, or they could get an account at a dedicated OpenID provider like myOpenID.com or pip.verisignlabs.com
- [04:10:12] * flaccid__ (n=flaccid@123-243-80-114.tpgi.com.au) Quit (Connection timed out)
- [04:10:20] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> The server associated with that URL is responsible for storing the password and authenticating the user
- [04:11:57] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> Then there's a protocol that lets the user's server tell your server that they've authenticated themselves. (There are libraries out there that implement all of this, so you don't have to write it all from scratch.)
- [04:13:49] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> i'm stuck trying to find a source of randomness - my server admin won't give me access to /dev/random or /dev/urandom
- [04:16:57] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> bluesmoon: That's odd. Any reason why they won't let you use it?
- [04:18:12] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> open_basedir restrictions
- [04:18:19] * cygnus (n=cygnus@c-24-22-45-171.hsd1.or.comcast.net) has joined #openid

- [04:18:25] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> they only let me access stuff under my directory and the main pear directory
- [04:18:48] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> and /dev isn't

- [04:19:41] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> Is it just within PHP, or have they limited your shell access too? If you can access /dev from your shell, you could create a symlink.
- [04:19:54] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> i don't have shell access - only ftp
- [04:20:08] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> let me try a perl script
- [04:23:21] * flaccid__ (n=flaccid@123-243-80-114.tpgi.com.au) has joined #openid
- [04:23:53] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> Oh, nevermind, I just checked the PHP manual. Seems they thought of that trick.
- [04:26:11] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> That sucks. :(
- [04:27:01] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> You could always rewrite it to call rand() instead of accessing /dev/(u)random, though I'm not sure what the security implications of that would be
- [04:28:51] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> this is the janrain detect script that i'm working with
- [04:28:52] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> it wants /dev/urandom
- [04:31:22] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> You can define Auth_OpenID_RAND_SOURCE as null before you import the library code into your application, in which case a pseudo-random number generator will be used as a fallback.
- [04:31:50] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> And since this is on a hosting provider without access to /dev, I think I can assume it's a non-critical app.

- [04:46:47] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> that's due to the RAND_SOURCE being null.
- [04:46:48] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> otherwise, it looks good
- [04:46:58] <PibbRelay>
<Trevor Johns> SSL support is also missing
- [04:47:35] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> yup, i know that
- [04:47:36] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> Yeah, although that doesn't constitute an incomplete setup for detect.php.
- [04:47:46] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> I suppose neither should RAND_SOURCE=null.
- [04:48:37] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> so i can go ahead and implement my server
- [04:50:34] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> i think i'll go get dinner first and do the rest from home.
- [04:50:48] <PibbRelay>
<cygnus> You can, but the lack of good randomness is even worse for a server, so I'd again caution against doing anything important with it.
- [04:51:32] <PibbRelay>
<bluesmoon> well, i'll be the only person on this server

Hi all - I'm going back into a Rails project I haven't updated in about 6 months - bringing everything up to Rails 2 - using the EastMedia Restful Open ID Authentication plugin, and I'm getting an error on OpenID::Store
- [06:45:51] <srogers>
It doesn't seem to be defined anymore in the latest version of the ruby-openid gem
- [06:46:35] <srogers>
OpenID::Consumer, for example, is there, but OpenID::Store is not - anyone else run into this?
- [06:53:00] <donomo>
srogers: OpenID::Store::Filesystem
- [06:53:33] <donomo>
gems/ruby-openid-2.0.2/lib/o
- [06:53:40] <donomo>
bah.
- [06:53:55] <donomo>
gems/ruby-openid-2.0.2/lib/openid/store/ => filesystem.rb interface.rb memory.rb nonce.rb
- [06:54:55] <srogers>
So is that something that needs to be updated in the EastMedia plugin?
- [06:58:50] <donomo>
srogers: i imagine so. might be best to go back to the openid gem you were using before
- [06:59:07] <donomo>
srogers: or patch the eastmedia gem. i havent seen that one before.
- [06:59:19] <srogers>
Yeah - I was using this one before - it looks like the world moved out from underneath it
- [06:59:40] <srogers>

- [07:05:06] <srogers>
IS there something else more obviously mainstream?
- [07:05:40] <donomo>
i haven't done an openid server before, just 'requesting parties'

- [16:20:09] <ricky>

- [16:20:47] <ricky>
Aha, I think I found it (http://openidenabled.com/resources/openid-test/checkup)
