  42. [10:05:29] <Acro> Just looking at the Yahoo OpenID announcement. It seems Yahoo only will act as a provider - is that your interpretation too?
  43. [10:05:47] * stub (n=stub@ppp-58-8-3-11.revip2.asianet.co.th) has joined #openid
  44. [10:06:58] <Makenshi> Yes
  45. [10:09:46] <Acro> Lame. It is against the whole concept and only benefits Yahoo. But they will get good marketing on it, though.

  50. [11:34:00] <Makenshi> Is it possible to give an openid url that is redirected to another location (i.e. not a direct referral)
  51. [11:34:19] <Makenshi> for example, http://openid.blah.com/ uses a web redirec to http://somedomain.com/blah which in turn has a referral
  52. [11:36:15] <tjohns> By referral do you mean delegation?
  53. [11:36:46] <Makenshi> yes
  54. [11:37:00] <tjohns> Yes. That will work.
  55. [11:37:09] <Makenshi> Great, thanks
  56. [11:37:26] <tjohns> However, http://somedomain.com/blah will be considered the claimed identifier
  57. [11:38:41] <Makenshi> ah.. here is the situation then
  58. [11:39:10] <Makenshi> i have been using id.mydomain.com with the server at www.own-id.com that provides the delegation
  59. [11:39:28] <Makenshi> since it is down, i was hoping i could simply make a web redirect directly to my provider
  60. [11:40:59] <Makenshi> If i understand right, i will not be able to access my accounts if i try and log in with the same url
  61. [11:43:50] <tjohns> What you can do is change id.mydomain.com's DNS to use to a server under your control, then use delegation to have it use a (working) OpenID provider
  62. [11:44:45] <Makenshi> Right.. it was just the site hosting the delegation that is down, i think i can sort that out
  63. [11:44:57] <Makenshi> It is just a little up in the air right now as I am moving from England to Denmark
  64. [11:46:39] * tjohns (n=tjohns@cpe-76-170-58-80.socal.res.rr.com) has left #openid
  65. [11:46:45] * tjohns (n=tjohns@cpe-76-170-58-80.socal.res.rr.com) has joined #openid
  66. [11:54:59] <Makenshi> i prefer to use id.domain.com than domain.com because in my case, domain.com is a blog, and it's more likely that the blog would get screwed up somehow and cause problems when i log into sites
  67. [11:55:10] <Makenshi> However, id.chaz6.com is less friendly for using in foaf
  68. [11:55:22] * priidu_ (n=aa@58.24.9.33) has joined #openid

  84. [14:06:06] <Makenshi> leighjames: by host, do you mean identity provider?
  85. [14:06:16] <leighjames> yes
  86. [14:06:45] <Makenshi> The best provide will depend upon your preferences and requirements. My current favorites are PIP and MyOpenID

  112. [17:10:52] * Makenshi ponders adding a list of sites that support OpenID as an iDP only so we can beat them with sticks
  113. [17:13:11] <raboof> maybe 2 lists: 'sites that support openid' and 'sites that partially support openid', making clear the latter are second-rate citizens :)
  114. [17:14:15] <Makenshi> Mmmm good idea

  123. [18:51:51] <MikeW> Anyone know if PIP supports OpenID 2?
  124. [18:53:42] <MikeW> Hrm, Technorati don't support OpenID signins either, grr
  125. [18:57:10] * danbri (n=danbri@host86-146-142-48.range86-146.btcentralplus.com) has joined #openid
  126. [19:10:13] <MikeW> oh great, for whatever reason I can't login to a MT4 blog with openid. An error occurred: The sign-in attempt was not successful; please try again.
  127. [19:10:43] <MikeW> Works if i supply the full PIP address, not when I link via a delegate

  134. [19:15:34] * idnar_ (i=mithrand@unaffiliated/idnar) has joined #openid
  135. [19:15:40] <MikeW> I just wonder why just about every other OpenID site out there has such a half-assed implementation
  136. [19:15:51] <PibbRelay> <mpg4> there are some known problems with delegation support on some RPs
  137. [19:16:17] <MikeW> Hi mpg4. Where is the other side of the relay?
  138. [19:16:53] <PibbRelay> <mpg4> relay?
  139. [19:17:06] <Makenshi> MikeW: pibb.com
  140. [19:18:07] <MikeW> ah okay
  141. [19:18:22] <MikeW> what's an RP?
  142. [19:18:41] <Makenshi> Relying part, a website that you provide your openid to in order to gain access
  143. [19:18:43] <Makenshi> *party
  144. [19:19:07] <Makenshi> Heh, I haven't logged onto Pibb in ages
  145. [19:19:33] <MikeW> a rel openid.server and openid.delegate should be enough when pointing to PIP, right?
  146. [19:19:52] <Makenshi> For OpenID v1, yes
  147. [19:19:53] <PibbRelay> <mpg4> yes...what makenshi said
  148. [19:20:49] <MikeW> I can't find any details for openid2.server for PIP
  149. [19:21:19] <MikeW> and when trying to figure out what's wrong, I stumbled upon people saying to put in XRDS and YADIS docs
  150. [19:21:35] <Makenshi> For PIP, use <link rel="openid2.provider" href="http://pip.verisignlabs.com/server" />
  151. [19:21:58] <Makenshi> <meta http-equiv="X-XRDS-Location" content="http://pip.verisignlabs.com/user/USERNAME/yadisxrds" />
  152. [19:22:15] <MikeW> are they required?
  153. [19:23:10] <Makenshi> For OpenID v2 yes
  154. [19:23:31] <MikeW> and the XRDS location looks slightly different to in http://netevil.org/blog/2007/06/howto-set-yourself-up-with-an-openid but /yadis has a link rel to /yadisrds anyway
  155. [19:23:37] <MikeW> *yadisxrds
  156. [19:23:53] <Makenshi> You can see for yourself at http://USERNAME.pip.verisignlabs.com/
  157. [19:24:58] <MikeW> Would I need to provide an openid2.delegate also?
  158. [19:25:48] <Makenshi> No
  159. [19:27:32] * idnar_ is now known as idnar
  160. [19:28:33] <MikeW> Hrm, I guess I'll chalk this up to a broken openid auth plugin for MT4
  161. [19:35:29] * cyy (n=ralph@VPN-131-10.fernuni-hagen.de) Quit ("( www.nnscript.de :: NoNameScript 4.02 :: www.XLhost.de )")
  162. [19:35:51] <MikeW> It would also be a nice touch if PIP could automatically fill in my username when it directs me to the login page
  163. [19:37:16] <trel1023> they don't fill it in as a security issue
  164. [19:37:46] <Makenshi> Isn't that up to the browser?
  165. [19:38:02] <Makenshi> Or do you mean OpenID url, you can use Seatbelt on Firefox for that
  166. [19:38:54] <MikeW> trel1023: That's... a little surprising as my username is in the PIP url anyway.
  167. [19:39:53] <Makenshi> The only username you should need is that of your iDP
  168. [19:40:05] <MikeW> the iDP is what?
  169. [19:40:32] <Makenshi> PIP
  170. [19:41:49] <MikeW> well, it would have been nice that when I go to login to a site with openid, I punch in username.pip.verisignlabs.com, verisign could have taken username and put it in the login box
  171. [19:42:03] <MikeW> I'm not sure how them not doing that improves security
  172. [19:42:30] <Makenshi> You don't need to supply a username to the site, just your openid
  173. [19:42:56] * MikeW rewrites sentence
  174. [19:43:41] <MikeW> well, it would have been nice that when I go to login to a site with openid, I punch in username.pip.verisignlabs.com, and when PIP asks me to login to their service, at least it could go and take the username.pip and prefill in username
  175. [19:44:14] <Makenshi> MikeW: surely your browser can remember your username?
  176. [19:44:32] <MikeW> I don't use the same computer all day
  177. [19:45:03] <MikeW> and that's dodging the point. How is them not filling in that one detail improving security?
  178. [19:47:23] <Makenshi> MikeW: that identity might be associated with a different account
  179. [19:47:40] <Makenshi> I have three identities associated with one PIP account
  180. [19:49:10] <MikeW> I see

  182. [19:52:30] <MikeW> Well my day of trying to use OpenID has been met with frustration. One of the main reasons for me to even try openID is the ability to use my own domain to delegate out to other services, but I've found that doesn't work everywhere. Many other sites have poor OpenID login implementations
  183. [19:53:00] <MikeW> I'm not sure OpenID getting a few million more users is such a good thing as so many sites supporting it just don't work correctly
  184. [19:54:14] <MikeW> Finding the values to put in the link rel tags has also been quite a frustration. Most of what I found out came from blogs rather than any of the "main" openID sites too
  185. [19:54:45] <Makenshi> MikeW: You could have easily found that out by examining the html on your pip identity page
  186. [19:54:54] <Makenshi> Bit late now, granted
  187. [19:55:09] <MikeW> there's a lot of documentation, just none of it usable. Oh well. I'll come back when openid is more usable
  188. [19:55:23] <Makenshi> Goodbye, then
  189. [19:55:34] <MikeW> Well, I didn't know that I could use the *same* tags. I thought if I'm delegating, I'd use different tags
  190. [19:55:57] <MikeW> again, the documentation needs to be looked at and cleaned up
