Just looking at the Yahoo OpenID announcement. It seems Yahoo only will act as a provider - is that your interpretation too?

Lame. It is against the whole concept and only benefits Yahoo. But they will get good marketing on it, though.

Is it possible to give an openid url that is redirected to another location (i.e. not a direct referral)
- [11:34:19] <Makenshi>
for example, http://openid.blah.com/ uses a web redirec to http://somedomain.com/blah which in turn has a referral
- [11:36:15] <tjohns>
By referral do you mean delegation?
- [11:36:46] <Makenshi>
yes
- [11:37:00] <tjohns>
Yes. That will work.
- [11:37:09] <Makenshi>
Great, thanks
- [11:37:26] <tjohns>
However, http://somedomain.com/blah will be considered the claimed identifier
- [11:38:41] <Makenshi>
ah.. here is the situation then
- [11:39:10] <Makenshi>
i have been using id.mydomain.com with the server at www.own-id.com that provides the delegation
- [11:39:28] <Makenshi>
since it is down, i was hoping i could simply make a web redirect directly to my provider
- [11:40:59] <Makenshi>
If i understand right, i will not be able to access my accounts if i try and log in with the same url
- [11:43:50] <tjohns>
What you can do is change id.mydomain.com's DNS to use to a server under your control, then use delegation to have it use a (working) OpenID provider
- [11:44:45] <Makenshi>
Right.. it was just the site hosting the delegation that is down, i think i can sort that out
- [11:44:57] <Makenshi>
It is just a little up in the air right now as I am moving from England to Denmark

i prefer to use id.domain.com than domain.com because in my case, domain.com is a blog, and it's more likely that the blog would get screwed up somehow and cause problems when i log into sites
- [11:55:10] <Makenshi>
However, id.chaz6.com is less friendly for using in foaf

*party
- [19:19:07] <Makenshi>
Heh, I haven't logged onto Pibb in ages
- [19:19:33] <MikeW>
a rel openid.server and openid.delegate should be enough when pointing to PIP, right?
- [19:19:52] <Makenshi>
For OpenID v1, yes
- [19:19:53] <PibbRelay>
<mpg4> yes...what makenshi said
- [19:20:49] <MikeW>
I can't find any details for openid2.server for PIP
- [19:21:19] <MikeW>
and when trying to figure out what's wrong, I stumbled upon people saying to put in XRDS and YADIS docs
- [19:21:35] <Makenshi>
For PIP, use <link rel="openid2.provider" href="http://pip.verisignlabs.com/server" />
- [19:21:58] <Makenshi>
<meta http-equiv="X-XRDS-Location" content="http://pip.verisignlabs.com/user/USERNAME/yadisxrds" />
- [19:22:15] <MikeW>
are they required?
- [19:23:10] <Makenshi>
For OpenID v2 yes
- [19:23:31] <MikeW>
and the XRDS location looks slightly different to in http://netevil.org/blog/2007/06/howto-set-yourself-up-with-an-openid but /yadis has a link rel to /yadisrds anyway
- [19:23:37] <MikeW>
*yadisxrds
- [19:23:53] <Makenshi>
You can see for yourself at http://USERNAME.pip.verisignlabs.com/
- [19:24:58] <MikeW>
Would I need to provide an openid2.delegate also?
- [19:25:48] <Makenshi>
No
- [19:27:32] * idnar_ is now known as idnar
- [19:28:33] <MikeW>
Hrm, I guess I'll chalk this up to a broken openid auth plugin for MT4

It would also be a nice touch if PIP could automatically fill in my username when it directs me to the login page
- [19:37:16] <trel1023>
they don't fill it in as a security issue
- [19:37:46] <Makenshi>
Isn't that up to the browser?
- [19:38:02] <Makenshi>
Or do you mean OpenID url, you can use Seatbelt on Firefox for that
- [19:38:54] <MikeW>
trel1023: That's... a little surprising as my username is in the PIP url anyway.
- [19:39:53] <Makenshi>
The only username you should need is that of your iDP
- [19:40:05] <MikeW>
the iDP is what?
- [19:40:32] <Makenshi>
PIP
- [19:41:49] <MikeW>
well, it would have been nice that when I go to login to a site with openid, I punch in username.pip.verisignlabs.com, verisign could have taken username and put it in the login box
- [19:42:03] <MikeW>
I'm not sure how them not doing that improves security
- [19:42:30] <Makenshi>
You don't need to supply a username to the site, just your openid
- [19:42:56] * MikeW rewrites sentence
- [19:43:41] <MikeW>
well, it would have been nice that when I go to login to a site with openid, I punch in username.pip.verisignlabs.com, and when PIP asks me to login to their service, at least it could go and take the username.pip and prefill in username
- [19:44:14] <Makenshi>
MikeW: surely your browser can remember your username?
- [19:44:32] <MikeW>
I don't use the same computer all day
- [19:45:03] <MikeW>
and that's dodging the point. How is them not filling in that one detail improving security?
- [19:47:23] <Makenshi>
MikeW: that identity might be associated with a different account
- [19:47:40] <Makenshi>
I have three identities associated with one PIP account
- [19:49:10] <MikeW>

Well my day of trying to use OpenID has been met with frustration. One of the main reasons for me to even try openID is the ability to use my own domain to delegate out to other services, but I've found that doesn't work everywhere. Many other sites have poor OpenID login implementations
- [19:53:00] <MikeW>
I'm not sure OpenID getting a few million more users is such a good thing as so many sites supporting it just don't work correctly
- [19:54:14] <MikeW>
Finding the values to put in the link rel tags has also been quite a frustration. Most of what I found out came from blogs rather than any of the "main" openID sites too
- [19:54:45] <Makenshi>
MikeW: You could have easily found that out by examining the html on your pip identity page
- [19:54:54] <Makenshi>
Bit late now, granted
- [19:55:09] <MikeW>
there's a lot of documentation, just none of it usable. Oh well. I'll come back when openid is more usable
- [19:55:23] <Makenshi>
Goodbye, then
- [19:55:34] <MikeW>
Well, I didn't know that I could use the *same* tags. I thought if I'm delegating, I'd use different tags
- [19:55:57] <MikeW>
again, the documentation needs to be looked at and cleaned up
