- [13:37:00] <GarethAdams>
I've read various blog entries on somehow twisting openID to use email addresses rather than URIs
- [13:37:18] <GarethAdams>
it sounds like a rubbish idea to me, but I wondered how much momentum it actually has
- [13:39:03] <GarethAdams>
and whether I'm wrong and it's actually a good idea
- [13:46:21] <samsm-_>
There is some provider that does that already ... probably more than one.
- [13:46:36] * samsm-_ is now known as samsm
- [14:09:01] <MacTed>
"http:" URIs aren't the same as email addresses ... but there's nothing that says that your personal URIs can't be "mailto:"
- [14:09:55] <MacTed>
I can actually see a pretty good argument in favor of using "mailto:" URIs for people, not least because people are accustomed to them
- [14:10:40] <MacTed>
and using (or being ablt to use) them for OpenID doesn't seem like a great or terrible leap
- [14:10:46] <MacTed>
s/ablt/able/
- [14:12:52] <MacTed>
both mailto: and http: URIs are indirect identifiers anyway -- the exact relation of each to the Person is merely convention
- [14:24:03] <GarethAdams>
my impression was that an openID identity without an explicit protocol would be taken as HTTP
- [14:24:38] <GarethAdams>
doesn't that imply that someone wanting to use an email address would have to specify mailto: in an openID field?
- [14:54:59] <MacTed>
it does. or the system that accepts mailto: URIs might prompt for the user to choose from a protocol menu (for *most* people will now be using http: URIs)
- [14:55:14] <MacTed>
or it might treat anything with an @ as a mailto: URI
- [14:55:16] <MacTed>
or ....
- [14:55:29] <MacTed>
the possibilities are (fortunately? unfortunately?) endless
- [15:04:50] <GarethAdams>
hmm
- [15:05:18] <GarethAdams>
it doesn't sound good if everyone can have a different ide about how to resolve a potential openID identity
- [15:05:25] <GarethAdams>
idea

yeah. if everyone says "I support OpenID", but some people support email and some don't, if some support XRI if some don't, if some require HTTPS and others don't work with HTTPS, then saying "log in with your OpenID here" doesn't mean much anymore

is there an openid server (or open-source openid server software) that allows the use of one-time passwords?
- [23:22:42] <raboof>
if I'd switch, my openid credentials would be valuable, so I'd rather not use them on public terminals etc.
