tantek: Do you use the Tails extension?
- [02:55:05] <tantek>
I have used it. But I'm still looking for the definitive repository of the latest open source for it.
- [02:55:35] <tantek>
We need to fix some key bugs, in particular the erroneous treatment of "title" attributes in non-abbr elements (e.g. spans)
- [02:56:08] <cdevroe>
Can you get it to run for Firefox on Mac?
- [02:57:29] <tantek>
Tails yes, TailsExport no.

Ah, I see.
- [03:00:21] <cdevroe>
There was a comment on TailsExport of someone saying "I got it to work on Mac, if you want it contact me" - I've been unable to find it anyone "online"
- [03:00:47] * lisppaste4 (n=lisppast@common-lisp.net) has joined #microformats
- [03:01:53] <tantek>
Indeed. It should be fairly easy to hack the original Tails to simply use http://feeds.technorati.com/contacts/ and http://feeds.technorati.com/events/ to export the hCard/hCalendar from the current page as vCard/iCalendar.
- [03:02:59] <cdevroe>

friedcell, your code looks fine. go ahead and send an email to microformats-discuss with http://www.adria-airways.com/_static/mailings/060703/index.html noting what you are doing and the fact that the X2V converter doesn't appear to pick up the TEL TYPE info inside an abbr.

dglazkov, could you please detail the problem any particular iCalendar client here? http://microformats.org/wiki/icalendar-implementations
- [17:14:14] <dglazkov>
yes. researching the details...
- [17:14:19] <tantek>
we shouldn't be doing ANY random outputting of various fields/properties like that unless the problem client is fully documented FIRST
- [17:14:29] <tantek>
application name, version number etc. etc.

me bad
- [17:24:19] <dglazkov>
if you add DTSTAMP and UID, everything works perfectly
- [17:24:25] <dglazkov>

i am feeling like the edu sector is doing to the do the typical edu thing and have everyone devise their own mf strategy...
- [19:35:35] <jrodgers>
it happens on a smaller scale inside departments/faculties/colleges/campuses
- [19:37:47] <dglazkov>
I am pleasantly surprised to see the rate of adoption
- [19:38:45] <jrodgers>
it will be fast.. but in islands inside each campus
- [19:39:37] <jrodgers>
like web standards... very few campuses haven't moved towards some level of web standards adoption... things holding them back are CMS or just the fact admin assistants are the bulk of web maintainers
- [19:42:21] <dglazkov>
and I think it's totally fine

- [19:45:43] <dglazkov>
http://microformats.org/wiki/icalendar-implementations
- [19:45:49] <dglazkov>
damn paste!
- [19:45:58] <dglazkov>
http://commondataset.org/
- [19:47:52] <jrodgers>
goodness... that is a national initiative in the US?
- [19:49:16] <dglazkov>
this is the standard format in which _all_ universities (Canada, too I think) submit their info to TP, Princeton Review and US News REport
- [19:49:25] <jrodgers>
the office that deals with that on my campus is right across the hall from mine...
- [19:49:26] <dglazkov>
it's how students do their shopping
- [19:49:40] <dglazkov>
now, imagine if we could get this decentralized
- [19:50:05] <jrodgers>
canadian students do their shopping via Macleans magazine
- [19:50:24] <dglazkov>
each university simply hosts a marked-up file, and Thomson-Petersons, et al. simply aggregate, kind of like Tantek's kitchen
- [19:50:31] <dglazkov>
oh -- I didn't know that
- [19:50:40] <jrodgers>

and we just made #1 again last year
- [19:52:55] <dglazkov>
congratulations
- [19:52:58] <jrodgers>
no where near the depth in the CDS mind you
- [19:53:11] <dglazkov>
CDS's depth is ... mind-bending
- [19:53:35] <jrodgers>
well the office that *bends* the numbers is across from me.. no one submits real facts.. makes it a sort of farce
- [19:54:07] <jrodgers>
Waterloo is #1 because Apple, Microsoft, Google, Open Text, Sybase, and RIM all actively recruit our students...
- [19:54:47] <jrodgers>
Waterloo just got added to Apple's 10 schools
- [19:55:58] <jrodgers>
something like a CDS would make it better for students though
- [19:56:30] <jrodgers>
give them (and their parents) facts to work with.. not pretty graphs in a magazine
- [19:57:27] <dglazkov>
http://petersons.com/ugchannel/
- [19:57:59] <dglazkov>
an example of how CDS is used
- [19:58:38] <dglazkov>
it's a real-life spec. Except it is excruciatingly hard for all parties to get this data together
- [19:58:43] <dglazkov>
submission is a pain
- [19:58:54] <dglazkov>
entry/cataloging is a pain
- [20:02:31] <dglazkov>
http://petersons.com/ugchannel/code/InstVC.asp?inunid=9106&sponsor=1
- [20:02:56] <jrodgers>
not surprised... you wouldn't want to know how bad our admissions system is in this province
- [20:04:20] <jrodgers>
i was just browsing around the michigan schools.. i grew up in the Soo on the northern border of michigan always want to go to University of Michigan ;)
- [20:04:51] <jrodgers>
that out of state tuition is insane though
- [20:07:10] <jrodgers>
that peterson's site is extremely comprehensive though.. great resource
- [20:08:05] <dglazkov>
princeton review has the same wealth of info, and so is US News Report -- all thanks to CDS
- [20:08:58] <dglazkov>
in a way, these folks have already progressed to the next step of Web 2.0. They share the data.
- [20:09:23] <dglazkov>
their competitive advantage is not in having the data, but in how they present it
- [20:09:58] <dglazkov>
make that just "Web", not "Web 2.0"
- [20:11:32] <jrodgers>
haha
- [20:13:13] <jrodgers>
if each uni hosted the marked-up file it would be a lot easier to keep the data current
- [20:13:57] <dglazkov>
yep. And in the same fashion, they could start consuming hCards, hCalendars, etc.
- [20:14:16] <dglazkov>
so that for instance, there could be a distributed directory of admissions people
- [20:14:37] * dglazkov wildly waves hands
- [20:14:49] <jrodgers>
well... it is a bit insane
- [20:14:52] <jrodgers>
;)
- [20:15:27] <jrodgers>
only because I guess that less than half the schools have centralized web resources skilled enough to make that a reality
- [20:15:45] <jrodgers>
of course it would only take one person in each school to take on the project...
- [20:16:20] <dglazkov>
