hey briansuda, i've got a bit of an esoteric question... i'm trying to emulate the feed service that technorati offers for transforming microformats to ics through your xslt fu. i'm trying the mod_rewrite route but the URI's aren
- [16:48:04] <scottjungling>
t getting passed properly
- [16:48:23] <scottjungling>
http://feeds.csuchico.edu/events/http://seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
- [16:48:24] <briansuda>
do you have a link?
- [16:48:41] <scottjungling>
mod_rewrite feels the need to drop one of the '/' from the URI
- [16:49:22] <briansuda>
hmm.. what is your re-write rule?
- [16:49:33] <scottjungling>
RewriteRule ^(events/)(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=$2 [QSA,L]
- [16:50:24] <briansuda>
i don't know re-write that well, i'm not sure what the QSA,L does, but....
- [16:50:29] <briansuda>
you might be able to do this in the REGEX
- [16:50:54] <briansuda>
RewriteRule ^events/(http://)?(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=http://$2 [QSA,L]
- [16:52:13] <scottjungling>
heh. http://http:/seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
- [16:52:23] <scottjungling>
closer, but i see where you're going with this
- [16:52:49] <scottjungling>
i was hoping to avoid that for fear of complexity that might arise for needing to check/match against https as well
- [16:52:57] <briansuda>
yeah, i'm not sure what the deal is with the // => /
- [16:53:30] <scottjungling>
yeah, has me stumped
- [16:53:55] <briansuda>
you might try asking kingryan or tantek, one of them had to get it working for technorati's site
- [16:54:28] <KevinMarks>
we do it in php
- [16:55:30] <scottjungling>
what method are you using in php?
- [16:55:32] <briansuda>
yes, but how do you get the URL for the page to transform from the service URL?
- [16:56:48] <KevinMarks>
$url_parts = explode('/', urldecode($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']));
- [16:56:50] <KevinMarks>
$ping_url = join('/', array_slice($url_parts, 2));
- [16:57:48] <scottjungling>
i think i have a rewrite rule that handles those cases
- [16:57:50] <scottjungling>
RewriteRule ^(events)/(referer)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=%{HTTP_REFERER}
- [16:58:12] <scottjungling>
my problem is specific to when you pass an arbitrary URI which may not be the refering page
- [17:00:57] <scottjungling>
and while it's possible just to specify the query string a la '?uri=http://blah'... i'm intrigued by the Technorati solution which is a cleaner url

- [17:06:01] <scottjungling>
hi kingryan, i was just chatting with brian about how technorati's microformat feed service handles URLs in queries, could you offer some insight?
- [17:06:24] <kingryan>
what do you mean?
- [17:06:53] <scottjungling>
i'm trying to emulate the way technorati handles mf feeds for converting to ics,etc
- [17:06:54] <scottjungling>
http://feeds.csuchico.edu/events/http://seaborn.csuchico.edu/~sjungling/mf/roomres.html
- [17:07:27] <scottjungling>
i've tried this via mod_rewrite but i'm finding a weird bug where the URL isn't passed properly in the rewrite process (as it's removing a slash)
- [17:07:30] <kingryan>
:D
- [17:07:55] <kingryan>
in php we do substr($_SERVER['PATH_INFO'], 8)
- [17:08:26] <kingryan>
using an apache handler
- [17:10:02] <scottjungling>
so, right now i have a rule of
- [17:10:03] <scottjungling>
RewriteRule ^(events/)(.*)$ /x2v/get-vcal.php?uri=$2 [QSA,L]
- [17:10:13] <kingryan>
that should work
- [17:10:40] <scottjungling>
it should, but it's removing a slash in the http://
- [17:11:11] <scottjungling>
would %{PATH_INFO} be a better substitute?
- [17:11:48] <kingryan>
maybe
- [17:12:08] <kingryan>
we do it all in the php code so that we can do whatever cleanup neccesary
- [17:12:11] <scottjungling>
funny thing: the matching/replacement from the rule works perfectly in an editor like bbedit, but apache seems to be dropping the ball... or possibly doing some uri escaping fu
- [17:12:42] <scottjungling>
so you have a directory with an index.php file that basically grabs PATH_INFO and goes to town on parsing?
- [17:12:57] <KevinMarks>
yes
- [17:13:02] <kingryan>
we don't use multiviews, though
- [17:13:08] <KevinMarks>
those were the 2 lines i posted
- [17:13:12] <kingryan>
we explicitly map it with an apache handler
- [17:13:26] <kingryan>
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/handler.html
- [17:13:37] <scottjungling>
ah, i understand what you were saying kevin
- [17:15:44] <scottjungling>
alright, i think i've got a good sense of what direction to go with this, thanks guys for your help
- [17:17:42] <kingryan>
mod_rewrite is evil black magic
- [17:17:47] <kingryan>
don't use it anymore :D
- [17:18:09] <scottjungling>
heh. double-edged sword
- [17:18:55] <kingryan>
from the docs: "Despite the tons of examples and docs, mod_rewrite is voodoo. Damned cool voodoo, but still voodoo. ''
- [17:20:44] <KevinMarks>
it's like jwz's rule iterated
- [17:21:13] <KevinMarks>
you have a problem. You use mod_rewrite. now you have 3 problems, and one of them is a regex
- [17:22:27] <scottjungling>

DanC, isn't there some TAG finding about not putting things like PHPSESSID into the URL?
- [21:13:32] <DanC>
well, webarch says "don't make aliases".
- [21:13:49] <DanC>
and we're working on a "metadata in uris" finding; it might be more specific about this idiom.
- [21:14:02] <DanC>
rather "don't make aliases without really good reasons"

- [21:24:23] <tantek>
DanC, actually, yes
- [21:24:29] <tantek>
you select the whole bunch of items
- [21:24:50] <tantek>
then you select Markup > Lists > Unordered List
- [21:24:59] <tantek>
and it puts your whole selection inside a one item unordered list
- [21:25:08] <DanC>
ok, that's "skootch in".
- [21:25:12] <DanC>
how about "skootch out"?
- [21:25:32] <KevinMarks>
Ecto does it for <ol> but not <dl>
- [21:26:43] <DanC>
I maintain my GTD projects list using XOXO plus some of that css/js magic . But it's not direct-manipulation editing. I'm tempted to get out my XSLT hammer and do XOXO<->ooutline format
- [21:27:23] <DanC>
but... hmm... my projects.html has hyperlinks in some of the item; I wonder if OmniOutliner would chew them up and throw them away.
- [21:27:33] <tantek>
hmm... looks like there isn't a "remove" one chunk of tags command
- [21:27:52] <tantek>
probably have to write a BBEdit plugin to do that
- [21:28:24] <KevinMarks>
http://webkit.org/projects/editing/index.html maybe
- [21:28:37] * DanC realizes "maintain" is generous; haven't actually editied my gtd projects list but a handful of times.
- [21:29:35] <DanC>
"Most importantly the WebKit editing engine is used to compose mail messages in Mail on Tiger." ooh! does that mean that I'll soon be able to make links while composing mail on a mac?

I like to use XHTML as the "truth" so that I can use direct manipulation tools, when they work, and fall back to a text editor when they don't.
- [21:34:42] <DanC>
But sometimes I do use another syntax as "the truth"; I use ReStructuredText in my python code, and I use N3 for RDF.
- [21:34:47] <kingryan>
I suppose that for me "direct manipulation" = text editor
- [21:35:02] <DanC>
"direct manipulation" is sorta like wysywig.
