I have a quick question. I am not too familiar with atom and rss but is atom as big as rss? I mean, considering I am unfamiliar with either one, will covering hAtom be a good idea?
- [12:51:14] <briansuda>
vbgunz, atom is supported as much as RSS in most applications, it is fine to use
- [12:51:27] <briansuda>
RSS has stopped being developed, Atom is an IEFT standar

I am trying to bookmark an xfolk entry in Firefox 2, using operator 0.6.2. It works somewhat, but I see no description, though I even bothered to create the following class "description extended" and I see not keywords, though I have several rel-tag within a meta class...
- [14:13:26] <vbgunz>
maybe I am getting the xfolk wrong or maybe the operator was not fully tested on xfolk or perhaps, things have changed all over and something broke... I think I broke too but curious... I do not think operator has got this wrong, maybe not sure :(
- [14:16:00] <vbgunz>
I even tried "description extended summary" ... under debug, it shows the description but it won't carry over into the actual Firefox bookmark :(

man, I am not sure what I have wrong :(

vbgunz did you happen to visit the conference link at the bottom of my slides :D
- [15:07:12] <bluesmoon>
thanks briansuda
- [15:07:15] <vbgunz>
bluesmoon: no
- [15:07:21] <vbgunz>
why, you have frames?
- [15:07:24] <vbgunz>
:)
- [15:07:24] <bluesmoon>
go there and be awed
- [15:07:35] <bluesmoon>
no, I don't, but the conference organisers had different ideas
- [15:07:58] <vbgunz>
bluesmoon: curious, are you using S5 for that presentation?
- [15:08:03] <bluesmoon>
vbgunz, yes
- [15:08:13] <bluesmoon>
if you view source, you'll see it at the end
- [15:08:16] <vbgunz>
I never used it but heard of it. that is very nice
- [15:08:59] <vbgunz>
where is this coference link?
- [15:09:00] <bluesmoon>
vbgunz, I have a perl script that generates the S5 presentation from a simple text file written in Markdown
- [15:09:11] <bluesmoon>
http://csibc.org/
- [15:09:17] <vbgunz>
oh ok, I see that
- [15:09:21] <vbgunz>
:(
- [15:09:35] <vbgunz>
that page looks seriously hurt :(
- [15:09:46] <vbgunz>
I think I would need to take a screenshot for you to see what I mean
- [15:09:55] <bluesmoon>
no, I know what you mean
- [15:10:10] <bluesmoon>
it goes into my HTML hell bucket
- [15:10:32] <bluesmoon>
(I'm not responsible for that)
- [15:11:04] <vbgunz>
oh
- [15:11:08] <vbgunz>
heh
- [15:11:14] <bluesmoon>
what sucks isn't that it's just a bad page - there are many of those - but that it's for a Web 2.0 conference
- [15:11:17] <vbgunz>
someone botched it
- [15:11:36] <bluesmoon>
the image is a .bmp and the page is made in frontpage (view source)
- [15:11:36] <vbgunz>
well bar that guy from the conference :)
- [15:11:54] <vbgunz>
wow, I have seen Frontpage since 97
- [15:12:08] <vbgunz>
haven't*
- [15:12:14] <bluesmoon>
so I started with, "how can we use microformats to improve the experience of this page", and I ended with "umm, nevermind."
- [15:12:41] <vbgunz>
hugeformats won't save that page
- [15:13:03] <bluesmoon>
lol
- [15:13:17] <vbgunz>
:)

I remember a little more than 10 years ago I wanted to get into web design... I bought Frontpage 97... I never did anything with it as I found it quite retarded... only about more than a month now, I've studied XHTML completely by hand and drilled "semantics" down (no joke), viewing the source of that page makes me cringe, I can completely understand how FP, MS and IE destroy the web :(
- [15:17:42] <bluesmoon>
I know what you mean. Though, I learnt a lot of good web programming (separation of style and content) from Microsoft books.
- [15:18:31] <bluesmoon>
I'd used frontpage a bit, but then realised that I was hand editing most of it afterwards anyway. This was also around 1997
- [15:19:00] <vbgunz>
I think I am going to write the operator dev an email. I seriously do not get the results I expect :(
- [15:20:32] <vbgunz>
I haven't did any *HTML for over a year+. The last year I've used nothing but Linux. Before switching to Linux, I used Dreamweaver and though I tweaked the HTML there, I can completely understand how in most cases, it is just bad... maybe great to mock something up but bad when used entirely alone :(
- [15:21:12] <vbgunz>
I don't know, I guess because switching to Linux, I don't trust anything not done mostly by hand...
- [15:22:16] <bluesmoon>
I switched to linux in '99, but had been browsing with lynx since '97

- [15:22:48] <vbgunz>
wow, I tried lynx once... I would rather use w3m ;)
- [15:22:50] <bluesmoon>
lynx gave me great respect for accessible development
- [15:23:08] <vbgunz>
yeah, so does w3m :)
- [15:23:48] <vbgunz>
I agree with you though, semantics and accessibility are very critical once you know how they apply to the mark up
- [15:23:59] <bluesmoon>
i was forced to use lynx because that's all my ISP provided on their shell account. I connected to the net using term95 under MS DOS
- [15:25:20] <vbgunz>
I switched to Linux because my PC did not ship with a Windows only CD... I really hate when a PC OEM ships an infested setup :(
- [15:25:24] <bluesmoon>
vbgunz, you're using gaim?
- [15:25:38] <vbgunz>
yeah
- [15:25:50] <bluesmoon>

- [15:26:36] <vbgunz>
oh
- [15:26:38] <vbgunz>
heh
- [15:26:39] <vbgunz>
I got it
- [15:27:09] <bluesmoon>
I don't actually have their credits file with me
- [15:27:50] <vbgunz>
I couldn't find your name or handle in it :(
- [15:27:55] <vbgunz>
I am using Gaim 2
- [15:28:29] <bluesmoon>
let me see, things may have changed
- [15:29:09] <vbgunz>
I would rather use Kopete *but* that thing is seriously *bugged*... ask me, I think it needs a complete rewrite, so far Gaim is the best multi-im cross platform client out there... I can't wait for Trillian Astra though, I hope it appears on Linux
- [15:30:11] <bluesmoon>

I went in to #kopete once to ask about several bugs. I was told don't be surprised, the bugs I was questioning about were open for more than a year without a fix in site... I use KDE and really dislike Gnome apps... some I can live with like Gaim, but others that open a lot of Gnome dialogs suck :(
- [15:34:44] <bluesmoon>
I have the same issue opening KDE apps on Gnome
- [15:34:59] <vbgunz>
heh, I hear you, I bet it sucks :)
- [15:35:32] <bluesmoon>
well, I haven't had to face it for a long time
- [15:35:56] <bluesmoon>
just those stray moments when koffice gets associated with some file type
- [15:36:36] <bluesmoon>
I used to use openoffice, but it's been causing my kernel to panic and I can't figure out the problem (I'm on FreeBSD)
- [15:36:43] <vbgunz>
why use koffice when you have open office?
- [15:36:47] <vbgunz>
ahh
- [15:37:22] <vbgunz>
one day, I hope to switch to FreeBSD. At least give it a serious try. no time soon though, *but* yes, it is on my todo list
- [15:38:52] <bluesmoon>
I'm pushing through with Abiword for when someone sends me a .doc file, and gnumeric for .xls is pretty good
- [15:39:08] <bluesmoon>
but I can't open OO file formats - isn't that ironic
- [15:40:32] <vbgunz>

in regards to the include pattern, this should be legal: <a class="include" href="#id" /> no?
- [20:37:23] <vbgunz>
hey, mkaply, if you specify one color, you should specify them all ;)
- [20:38:27] <mkaply>
vbgunz: I'm not understanding your xfolk problem with operator
- [20:39:10] <vbgunz>
ok one sec, I'll try to clear it up
- [20:40:29] <mkaply>
vbgunz: the second xfolk on your page works fine for me. Is the problem with the first?
- [20:40:31] <vbgunz>
mkaply: go here and view the source, I believe I have it correct http://vbgunz.com/xfolkeg.html
- [20:40:38] <vbgunz>
no, the first is fine
- [20:40:44] <vbgunz>
it's more of a template
- [20:41:08] <vbgunz>
when I go to export the 2nd to Firefox 2, my description and "meta" are not exported... is this intended?

- [20:41:38] <vbgunz>
really?
- [20:41:42] <mkaply>
There's really no place to put the meta at delicious.
- [20:41:46] <mkaply>
vbgunz: try this
- [20:41:53] <mkaply>
vbgunz: go to options, turn on debug mode
- [20:41:54] <vbgunz>
I do not get meta or description, in Firefox or de.lico.us
- [20:41:58] <vbgunz>
ok
- [20:42:13] <vbgunz>
got it
- [20:42:28] <mkaply>
ok, you need to switch to microformats mode as well (not actions mode)
- [20:42:47] <vbgunz>
ok
- [20:43:06] <vbgunz>
yes, display=microformats, debug
- [20:43:15] <mkaply>
select xfolk->vbgunz->debug
- [20:43:27] <mkaply>
you should see

}
- [20:43:52] <vbgunz>

- [20:44:25] <vbgunz>

this is when sending to delicious?
- [20:44:51] <mkaply>
or in Firefox
- [20:45:03] <vbgunz>
to my firefox bookmark
- [20:45:05] <mkaply>
ah
- [20:45:35] <mkaply>
I see what you are saying. I don't think I can set the description in Firefox itself via the API I have
- [20:45:45] <vbgunz>
ahh :)
- [20:46:16] <mkaply>
I lied. I can
- [20:46:17] <mkaply>
hold on
- [20:46:30] <vbgunz>
can you export tags into categories?

sorry, I meant tag into keywords

- [20:48:24] <vbgunz>
Firefox supports keywords on a bookmark, it would be nice to export tags to keywords :)
- [20:48:46] <vbgunz>
I guess using the tags under meta would be helpful here?
- [20:49:42] <mkaply>
Firefox only supports one keyword as a shortcut to a bookmark
- [20:49:57] <mkaply>
so if I put all the tags under there, it wouldn't work
- [20:50:06] <mkaply>
I should be exporting the tags to something like delicious though
- [20:50:19] <vbgunz>
mkaply: ahh
- [20:50:33] <mkaply>
try this. Make a keyword foo
- [20:50:41] <mkaply>
then type foo in your URL bar
- [20:50:49] <mkaply>
if you made the keyword foo foo2
- [20:50:59] <mkaply>
you would have to type "foo foo2" not foo OR foo2
- [20:51:05] <vbgunz>
ha

- [20:52:21] <vbgunz>

- [20:52:28] <mkaply>
Well, as long as I can send the tags to delicious - have to check their API
- [20:53:42] <vbgunz>
also, not sure if this is revelant or helpful but shouldn't the description in xfolk be the description in delicious? currently, the description is exported to the note field and not the description field
- [20:54:03] <vbgunz>
maybe the taggedlink content can be the note?
