not as yet, but i've been dying to. i haven't worked on any web-related project in some time. i love the idea more than anything :)
- [22:06:42] <primitivemachine>
i am espcially intrigued by the potential of apml and xfn, provided the end user has control over the actual files
- [22:07:26] <primitivemachine>
if they functioned like cookies, were sites could modify them but they resided on my machine I could see a lot of good applications

http://24ways.org/2006/styling-hcards-with-css
- [22:19:30] <primitivemachine>
that's a cool way to display an hCard with CSS
- [22:21:31] <dw_>
sorry, my 3G internet is being crap :(
- [22:22:03] <dw_>
that design is rather fetching, yes
- [22:23:54] <primitivemachine>
dw_ do you work in web or graphic design? i'm just an engineer/hobbyist with this sort of thing
- [22:28:12] <dw_>
i'm an engineer of sorts. unemployed just now, but will be starting a new job at yahoo in the coming 2 weeks
- [22:28:34] <dw_>
i haven't worked directly on web stuff in the past few years, but my new position will see me working partly with web technologies
- [22:28:43] <dw_>

- [22:30:35] <dw_>
are you still studying?
- [22:31:25] <primitivemachine>
no, i'll be working on submarines for general dynamics in a few weeks
- [22:31:32] <dw_>
ooh :)
- [22:31:34] <dw_>
sounds exciting
- [22:31:53] <dw_>
i was just reading last night about various nuclear sub implosions.. i hope you wont be on them when they're in the deep sea :)
- [22:31:53] <primitivemachine>
my interest with the web makes me wish i'd taken more art and computer classes in college
- [22:32:23] <primitivemachine>
no i'll be at a desk most likely
- [22:32:32] <dw_>
i'm useless at creative design. i can produce clean looking document styles and whatnot, but anything arty i compeltely fail at
- [22:33:08] <primitivemachine>
yeah pure arty stuff i'm probably not so great at
- [22:34:05] <primitivemachine>
my website is primitivemachine.net, but its just a tumblr blog where i played with the css
- [22:34:25] * tommorris (n=tommorri@i-83-67-98-32.freedom2surf.net) has joined #microformats
- [22:34:26] <jibot>
tommorris is a semantic web geek (with a philosophy degree, naturally), lives in East Sussex, UK, is something of a strange quark (strangeness value: -1) and blogs at http://tommorris.org
- [22:35:00] <primitivemachine>
i haven't taken the plunge to get hosting and wordpress althought I have run those before and it's fun
- [22:35:03] <dw_>
what remains of my blog is at http://dmw.me.uk , but i mostly removed information from it in 2006
- [22:35:17] <dw_>
can't remember why, but i became a little paranoid :]

- [22:36:25] <primitivemachine>
i think people have reason to be paranoid these days, what with all of our info being essentially the property of the services we use
- [22:36:45] <primitivemachine>
hello tommorris
- [22:36:57] <tommorris>
hey primitivemachine
- [22:37:23] <tommorris>
Paranoid. Me?
- [22:37:37] <tommorris>
The government know everything there is to know about me anyway. I'm just linking the dots for them.
- [22:37:42] <dw_>
primitivemachine: it was after joining another large web company, and realising they had my photo album and the ability to find my face elsewhere on the internet that i decided to lock my data down :)
- [22:37:50] * cygri (n=cygri@226.Red-80-24-90.staticIP.rima-tde.net) has joined #microformats
- [22:38:07] * dw_ has grew up around cameras and the internet, and did some regrettable things in his youth :P
- [22:38:41] * tommorris commutes to London, the city with more CCTV cameras per square mile than anywhere on Earth
- [22:38:46] <primitivemachine>
ah yes, it's far too easy for the past to catch up with you these days
- [22:38:47] * tommorris basically has no privacy anyway
- [22:39:10] <dw_>
tommorris: you know the UK has about 25% of the total number of cctv installations in the entire world? i saw that statistic a few months back
- [22:39:24] <primitivemachine>
did you guys see that music video from the group that did it entirely on london CCTV? they got some great shots actually :)
- [22:39:24] <tommorris>
yup.
- [22:39:25] <dw_>
tommorris: where do you commute from? I just moved here
- [22:39:39] <dw_>
primitivemachine: it was faked apparently
- [22:39:51] <dw_>
oh, Brighton :]
- [22:39:54] <tommorris>
I commute on the Hastings to London
- [22:39:59] <dw_>
aah
- [22:40:05] <tommorris>
but not from Hastings.
- [22:40:23] * tommorris does not wish to discuss where he lives on a publicly logged IRC channel
- [22:40:39] <dw_>
hi, internet!
- [22:40:54] <tommorris>
about an hour out of London though
- [22:41:16] <primitivemachine>
oh rats, good fake then. I did have to wonder where they got access to all of it
- [22:41:30] <tommorris>
speaking of which, I'm getting a train not long after 5am tomorrow morning, so probably ought to sleep
- [22:41:53] <tommorris>
usually #microformats is pretty dead except wiki updates, but now I can't get a peep out of the #swig folk
- [22:42:01] <primitivemachine>
the footage I mean, some of the cctv for traffic and weather is publicly available in the states, so i suppose it wasn't too much of a stretch
- [22:42:15] <tommorris>

- [22:42:22] <primitivemachine>
whats swig?
- [22:42:30] <tommorris>

- [22:42:35] <tommorris>
-p
- [22:43:25] <primitivemachine>
ah
- [22:43:26] <tommorris>
They are nice folks when they aren't hanging around outside school gates scaring children with recursive acronyms and disjunct object property relations.
- [22:43:37] <primitivemachine>
hahaa
- [22:44:02] * tommorris makes a mental note to figure out new and exciting ways to scare children with parts of the OWL specification
- [22:45:07] <primitivemachine>
i dont know how it is in the UK, but it seems the web 2.0 in-crowd is an obnoxiously cliquey, and because the in-crowd essentially governs which apps grow their userbase, they're going to take their time making their apps open/friendly/microformat-happy
- [22:45:17] * cygri (n=cygri@226.Red-80-24-90.staticIP.rima-tde.net) Quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
- [22:45:42] <tommorris>
Obnoxiously cliquey? I'd say no on that.
- [22:45:43] * cygri (n=cygri@226.Red-80-24-90.staticIP.rima-tde.net) has joined #microformats
- [22:46:44] <tommorris>
It can seem cliquey, but the nerdy Web 2.0 community has been one of the most welcoming I know
- [22:48:20] <primitivemachine>
i guess i am just not looking in the right spots
- [22:48:38] <tommorris>
Compare it to other cliques, and you'll find it to be welcoming
- [22:49:26] <dw_>
primitivemachine: the blogs can seem horribly incestuous, but if you watch the spread of new ideas, and who is working on what, it is not really that incestuous
- [22:49:45] <dw_>
for instance the things i am interested in, openid, oauth, and microformats, mostly/entirely have different leaderships and communities built around them
- [22:50:13] <tantek>
with perhaps just enough crossover to make them work together
- [22:50:14] <dw_>
i think 99% of it is learning to speak the local tongue (which may be based 50% on buzzwords, but still, that's how it goes in the 21st century tech industry :)
- [22:51:29] <primitivemachine>
how does one meet internet people? for me 99% of the people I interact with online are people I initially knew in person
- [22:51:40] <tantek>
upcoming.org
- [22:51:52] <tommorris>
yep, go to geek events in $YOUR_LOCATION
- [22:51:53] <primitivemachine>

Don't worry, madam, I am from the Internet!
- [22:53:42] <tommorris>
primitivemachine: where are you? Most cities in US + EU have some form of geek community.
- [22:53:48] <primitivemachine>
DC
- [22:54:13] <tommorris>
there are BarCamps in DC
- [22:54:27] <tantek>
i believe there are also "refresh" events in DC
- [22:54:42] <primitivemachine>
i have heard of barcamp, i wasn't aware it was a thing
- [22:54:47] <primitivemachine>
hmm
- [22:55:04] <tommorris>
It's not just a thing, it's a freaking awesome thing
- [22:55:07] <tantek>
you can even ask about barcamp in #barcamp
- [22:55:18] <tommorris>
BarCampLondon4 happened last weekend
- [22:55:41] <tommorris>
lots of microformats, social-network-portability and SemWeb chit-chat
- [22:56:13] <tantek>

- [22:58:48] <primitivemachine>
as i've found! i'm an infrequent IRC user
- [22:59:00] <dw_>
tommorris: what other events are there in london? i'm aware i just missed barcamp, sadly
- [22:59:46] * dw_ is now known as dw__
- [22:59:50] <tommorris>
there's geekdinner (once a month), a lot of London ____ User Groups (Ruby, Java, Python, .NET etc.)
- [22:59:54] * dw (i=dmwdmw@unaffiliated/dw) Quit (Nick collision from services.)
- [23:00:01] * dw__ is now known as dw
- [23:00:22] <primitivemachine>
maybe i should investigate a barcamp, sounds like a grown-up lan party
- [23:00:29] <tommorris>
we had SemanticCamp in February, and my arm may be twisted into organising another
- [23:00:42] <tommorris>
primitivemachine: do. It's basically a conference done properly
- [23:02:14] <tommorris>
there's a few other things in London - 'MiniBar' (which is fairly crap but has it's uses - if you want to hang out with entrepreneurs seeking investment, or are seeking investment etc.), there's OpenCoffee and CreativeCoffee (the latter for the business/entrepreneur types, the latter for geeks/designers/etc.)
- [23:02:36] <tommorris>
I put up a page a while back listing a large number of the events in London - http://tommorris.org/pages/london
- [23:03:10] <dw>
thanks tommorris. the opencoffee stuff isn't so much my thing
- [23:03:28] <dw>
going to poke through this list now
- [23:03:33] <tommorris>
also, there's Mashed coming up soon
- [23:03:40] <tommorris>
which will rock
- [23:03:51] <dw>
what kind of thing goes on there?
- [23:04:08] <tommorris>
have you heard of Hack Day?
- [23:04:15] <tommorris>
It's like that but with a different name
- [23:04:25] <dw>
aha.
- [23:04:35] <dw>
do you know if london python has a mailing list, or is it just a planet?
- [23:04:38] <dw>
(that sounds really odd)
- [23:04:43] <tommorris>
http://mashed08.eventbrite.com/
- [23:04:48] <tommorris>
the london python people
- [23:04:52] <tommorris>
haven't kept track of them
- [23:05:02] <tommorris>
think they have a mailing list
- [23:05:45] <dw>
aah, mashed. i have tickets for that
- [23:05:54] <dw>
i'd completely forgotten, thanks :)
- [23:05:55] <tommorris>
they used to have their events under the name "London 2.0"
- [23:06:23] <tommorris>
which was hilarious, because you'd go along thinking it'd all be business/suit/entrepreneurs/VC people, and it'd be a ton of Python geeks
- [23:06:29] <tommorris>
a pleasant surprise, needless to say
