IRC Log for #microformats on 2006-01-10

Timestamps are in UTC.

  1. [00:02:36] <cgriego> What I don't get is why vCal took off as a subscription format and vCard didn't.
  2. [00:03:13] <dmose> by vCal do you mean ICS?
  3. [00:03:33] <dmose> a.k.a. iCalendar
  4. [00:15:06] * dustym (n=dustym@office.cavoksolutions.com) Quit ()
  5. [00:17:37] <cgriego> right
  6. [00:17:48] <KevinMarks> well, addressbooks don't change so often
  7. [00:17:58] <KevinMarks> vCard is an interchange format
  8. [00:20:01] * gregelin (n=chatzill@216-80-120-72.mart-bsr1.chi-mart.il.cable.rcn.com) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
  9. [00:20:09] <cgriego> so was vCal, I don't think an iCard is too crazy an idea
  10. [00:22:10] <cgriego> "this is my new email addy, update your address books" is clumsy and is the kind of 'make my life easier' task that computers are supposed to be good at
  11. [00:22:46] * gregelin (n=chatzill@216-80-120-72.mart-bsr1.chi-mart.il.cable.rcn.com) has joined #microformats
  12. [00:42:48] <kingryan> cgriego, vcard could easily become subscription
  13. [00:43:12] <kingryan> I know that with apple's address book, all you'd have to do is fetch the new vcards and tell addressbook to open them
  14. [00:43:21] <kingryan> and it takes care of the merging of changes
  15. [00:50:39] <KevinMarks> ryan, did you see my corrections to your proposal?
  16. [00:51:26] <t1m> kingryan did see what I pointed out and hour ago in here?
  17. [00:51:58] <kingryan> KevinMarks, I see them now
  18. [00:53:44] <kingryan> got it, t1m
  19. [00:55:39] <kingryan> k, another 'final draft' : http://theryanking.com/xtech.html
  20. [00:55:41] <kingryan> :D
  21. [00:58:56] <t1m> great, looks good, clearly explains the advantage of using microformats to control data :)
  22. [00:59:14] <kingryan> good, I'm just hoping it'll get accepted
  23. [00:59:36] <kingryan> I also hope to get more people people these basic ideas, so we can talk about more technical issues
  24. [01:00:00] <kingryan> but I think this 'microformats 101' stuff is still necessary
  25. [01:03:36] <t1m> no doubt, microformats are beginning to be widley recognized, though the concept behind them may not be understoon fully yet by everyone, just the fact that microformats are something to talk about.
  26. [01:03:54] <kingryan> yes, t1m
  27. [01:03:55] <t1m> widely*
  28. [01:04:14] <kingryan> are you in europe, t1m?
  29. [01:04:35] <t1m> Massachusetts, USA
  30. [01:04:47] <kingryan> ah
  31. [01:04:49] <kingryan> nevermind

  36. [01:15:26] <KevinMarks> 'more ad-hoc manner, which simpler specification' still there
  37. [01:16:34] <kingryan> ah, that was supposed to be "with simpler specifications"
  38. [01:16:38] <kingryan> does that make sense?

Headline is "a head of a newspaper story or article" (webster), rather than head of a newspaper serial or edition.
  119. [20:45:37] <BenjaminCarlyle> I think the suggestion to defer the quesion is probably the right one.

  125. [20:57:31] <BenjaminCarlyle> Oh... also on the subject of last-modified-brainstorming: The current documentation for last-modified suggests it wants to take on the same role as atom:published and atom:updated generally for all microformats. My understading of our email exchanges is that you would be against it taking up that role. I think you want it to just describe the publication and update of a whole page, is that right?

  133. [21:20:06] <RobertBachmann> This is not my intention. Primary focus is on pages. If other microformats need updated/published the can re-use it.
  134. [21:23:10] <RobertBachmann> they can re-use it*
  135. [21:28:51] <BenjaminCarlyle> Ok... so do you think there is anything to add to for atom given the current brainstorming activity?
  136. [21:29:53] <BenjaminCarlyle> If hAtom goes ahead as is I think "published" and "updated" will be the terms that end up making their way into last-modified, too.

  150. [23:18:11] <rawtext> tantek, do you think it would be smarter to write my resume in xml or xhtml? I understand that a web page can be a good source for the use of the information, but I'm thinking xml might be more usefull, rather a microformat would be even better. I could always learn how to style xml, which would be readable in all browsers, no (probably IE)?

  152. [23:19:52] <tantek> rawtext (nice name btw ;) ) - xhtml *is* xml, so by writing it in xhtml, you would be writing it in xml
  153. [23:20:26] <rawtext> oh yeah, this is t1m btw, thanks ;)
  154. [23:20:38] <tantek> if you mean, "should I make up my own xml elements and use those to publish my resume", the answer is no, you shouldn't, and Tim Bray just wrote a good post about that.
  155. [23:21:30] <rawtext> reading that now.
