- [02:44:44] <elliottcable>
grrrrr
- [02:44:46] <elliottcable>
it hates me
- [02:44:56] <elliottcable>
I can't send email!
- [02:45:03] <elliottcable>
so I can't verify my account
- [02:47:07] <elliottcable>
Ahhah. It prints the entire e-mail to the log! Ha! lol
- [02:47:49] <elliottcable>
Gravatar service is really spotty
- [02:48:00] <elliottcable>
What if there was like, an avatar or picture thingie built into the open ID standard?
- [02:48:29] <elliottcable>
So instead of clients querying gravatar.com for your avatar, they could query your OpenID server. Much cleaner, gives you much more control
- [02:50:19] <trel1023>
it's been discussed, but probably will definitely not be a part of the openid spec itself
- [02:50:26] <trel1023>
google for pavatar
- [02:52:03] <elliottcable>
trel1023: Hmm I would hope pavatar and openID could gain support together
- [02:52:19] <elliottcable>
the problem with gravatar is that a hell of a lot of people don't use the same email address for everything
- [02:52:22] <elliottcable>
like me
- [02:52:24] <elliottcable>
so it's useless to us
- [02:52:27] <trel1023>
well, and it's centralized
- [02:53:42] <elliottcable>
yeah, which is always bad anyway
- [02:53:42] <elliottcable>
lol
- [02:53:44] <elliottcable>
*almost
- [02:54:22] <trel1023>
two main reasons - political.... what if they go evil.... and practical..... what if they go offline
- [02:54:34] <trel1023>
both are showstoppers for a lot of people
- [02:56:08] <elliottcable>
like me
- [02:56:17] <elliottcable>
and worst of all, I don't have flexibility control over them
- [02:56:41] <elliottcable>
so if AKA I wanted to be able to use my weird email address system, I can't make it work because I can't decide to control the service by hosting it myself
- [02:56:50] <elliottcable>
if NOTHING ELSE
- [02:57:19] <elliottcable>
if gravatar would just let you slave your domain name's worth of addresses over to something else if you verified it or something
- [02:58:01] <trel1023>
well, i think the longer term solution is discoverable avatar links
- [02:58:20] <trel1023>
link-rel or otherwise, in the head of a url
- [02:59:04] <elliottcable>
trel1023: I agree
- [02:59:06] <trel1023>
right now we're thinking in 80x80 images... but there's no reason to limit it to that... can easily envision pointing to a 3d model in the next few years
- [02:59:18] <elliottcable>
trel1023: It'd just be nice to not have ANOTHER entry if you already have openid.delegate
- [02:59:36] <elliottcable>
which is why I said somehow at least refrence it from the openid standard
- [03:00:05] <trel1023>
well, it's still out of scope - how people put stuff on top of openid, ... fine

GabeW: any chance you have a moment to try running the python-openid rc2 against the openid4java code you've been developing?

- [23:57:01] <rgl_>
the diagnose-server tool is nice. my prototype provider seems to work :)
- [23:57:50] <rgl_>
BTW, its source is available?
- [23:58:47] <_keturn>
yeah, I'll find a link in a sec
- [23:59:40] <_keturn>
I haven't publicised the source too much because, between the fact that it's a mod_python app and depends a lot on openid library internals, it's kind of error-prone to deploy
