question: am looking to use OpenID or OAuth... but my biggest constraint is my server is on the public internet, but the authenticating site is on a private corporate network. It is visible to the client (who is on a VPN) - so the only way to interact back/forth would be via redirects... anyone have any insight on this? I know OAuth looks to require direct communication to get a request token.... so just now looking into OpenID to see what it supp

hello, got a question about openid capability
- [22:21:58] <sprewell1>
does openid enable the use case where you sign in with your login once
- [22:22:12] <sprewell1>
and then are signed in for any openid website for the remainder of the session?
- [22:22:57] <sprewell1>
since the openid spec makes no statement about persistence on the user agent side, I'm guessing not
- [22:23:18] <sprewell1>
unless you install some openid plugin like seatbelt and maintain that persistence yourself as a user
- [22:23:21] <sprewell1>
is that right?
- [22:23:59] <sprewell1>
if so, that would mean that if you went to 3 openid sites, you would have to sign in separately with openid for each one
- [22:24:22] <sprewell1>
which is nice that you can use the same login 3 times, but it would be nicer if you could just login once for the 3 sites ;)

- [22:46:52] <keturn>
sprewell1: that's correct. if you've identified to the other sites before and they remember your id with a cookie or something, and you've told your provider to always allow authentications to those sites, they can verify your identity pretty quickly without any user interaction
- [22:47:03] <keturn>
but that's a lot of "if"s
- [22:53:20] <sprewell1>
hmm, so a cookie is how they normally do that? I guess it's not a common use case either
- [22:54:00] <sprewell1>
I think the real goal of single sign-on is to have such persistance, that's what people really want
- [22:54:30] <sprewell1>
of course, that's a harder problem too as you have to have provisions to guess when sessions end, as you wouldn't want to have them persist forever :)
- [22:55:55] <sprewell1>
anyway, I want to implement such a single-sign on, persistent service so I was looking to see if openid had already solved that problem, guess not
- [22:57:13] <sprewell1>
it is a harder problem no doubt, as you have to get a lot of authentication stuff going in the background to make it all seamless, but always under the control of the end user ultimately
- [22:57:39] <sprewell1>
anyway, think I'll take a shot at it ;)
